The Sri Lanka Development Foundation was established in the United States to provide funding for a wide range of vital projects in post-conflict Sri Lanka. The foundation's first project is the construction of a world class cricket stadium in Northern Sri Lanka, a region that was heavily damaged by the successful 25-year conflict to defeat terrorism.
The importance of cricket in Sri Lanka cannot be overstated. Youth throughout the country revel in the sport. The Sri Lankan national team is one of the world's finest. Sri Lanka boasts several world class cricket venues.
The foundation's first project is the construction of a world class cricket stadium in Northern Sri Lanka, a region that was heavily damaged by the successful 25-year conflict to defeat terrorism.
But the conflict for years made it difficult to support cricket in the North.
The stadium project will finally provide that support, encouraging young people throughout Sri Lanka to strive and thrive in sports and to reconcile past ethnic differences through the common goodwill and trust that this popular sport engenders.
The foundation's plan envisions a cricket oval and surrounding stadium on land donated by the government in northeast Sri Lanka. Funds raised by the foundation will go toward design, grading and landscaping of the oval as well as the construction of the cricket stadium itself.
The foundation's initial fund-raising goal for this project is $100,000, with additional fund raising efforts to follow as needed.
Negotiations are underway today with Sri Lanka Cricket for the exact location of the stadium, with final site selection expected in early autumn 2010. |
